For instance, if you have installed 6 inches of fiberglass insulation with an R-value of 3 per inch, the total R-value would be 18 (3 x 6 = 18). Additionally, it’s essential to recognize that the R-value of insulation is cumulative, implying that by adding more layers of insulation, the total R-value will increase accordingly.

Consider the chart below, you see that Spray Foam (closed-cell) has 6.0 to 7.0 R-value per inch:

Knowing that Florida requires 30 to 60 R-value, and wanting to aim for heightened energy efficiency you decide to target an R-value of 60.  You would merely divide the target R-value by the number in the chart to get the number of inches required.  In this case, the # inches required = 60/6 or 10 inches.  For this example 6 was chosen since it was more restrictive and gave a more conservative response.  Most R-values for materials purchased will be more specific numbers to make calculation more simplistic.
